Newy Colour Font
FROM PAINT TO SCREEN
Seeing handwritten letters come to life as a font or wordmark is my passion and was the inspiration for Newy, a display colour font that started as a dynamic blend of gouache and watercolour paint. Newy is designed to grab attention through its vibrant hues of Winsor Newton Bengal Rose and Cyan which blend together to create lavender and purple. After vectoring in Illustrator, the Bengal Rose, Cyan and lavender swatches became the master palette with greens, yellows, blues and reds added to provide five additional colour palettes.
WATCH MY PROCESS
Painted using a Caran d’Ache fibre tip pen, then vectored in Illustrator and imported into Glyphs, the videos below show the detailed work involved with bringing a hand-painted colour font to life. It only took an afternoon to paint the characters and wait for them to dry — then the real work began in Illustrator and Glyphs font building platform.
KERNING AND REFINING
Once the entire character set was loaded into Glyphs, I began kerning, adding new colour palettes, and creating alternates by using Glyphs’ new Cycling script. Newy features diacritics, numerals, punctuation and three sets of alternates. Six liquid colourways — Bubble, Camo, Chrome, Fire, Mustard, Paint, and Water — are ideal options for climate change projects, awareness campaigns or anywhere you need to brighten a brand with hyper hues.
For Australia’s historic 2023 referendum voting on an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, I used the Fire font from the typeface to create a unique tee in support of the YES campaign.
