Amplify to Unify
CONCEPT
Amplify to Unify is a printed guide highlighting eight ways non-Indigenous Australians can be better allies to Indigenous Australians. This presentation is part of the final outcome for a university course, Social Change through Creative Practice.
Starting as a small group investigating equity, each team member branched out to an individual topic, requiring detailed research, feedback and skill to produce a viable outcome that had the potential to bring social change and form part of PhD study.
PROCESS
it is the role of designers to make products that contribute to social, environmental and economic wellbeing to make the world a better place. With a printed guide in mind, I was drawn to the idea of riso print for its lively outcome when two colours blend together and felt this underlying message aligned to my project.
A world with only one colour lacks interest and diversity. Add a second colour and immediately there is stimulus to the mind, body and spirit. Like multiculturalism, riso printing is a mix of beautiful colours that showcase how multiple colours creates interest and diversity.
INDUSTRY RESEARCH
I conducted detailed research by connecting with academic leaders who helped direct my approach. What started out as a project focused on 99 years of non-Indigenous Archibald Prize winners quickly morphed into a project about how white voices can support Indigenous people by advocating, learning, asking, acknowledging, visiting, joining, supporting and donating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders causes.
I conducted focus group research of preferred colours to ensure the riso colours were neutral and inviting. The eight titles were sketched then Photoshopped and placed into an InDesign pagination above the accompanying text.
