Type Gang
CONCEPT
Created to honour the supportive Type Gang team on Instagram, I wanted to craft a design that felt like they were the centre of the world, cocooned within a calligraphic ocean of flourishes. I began sketching the words, seeing how they could nest together amid a p descender and capital G. Then came the cartouche of flowing ribbons, connecting letters and words.
PROCESS
Drawing the completed 30x30cm design onto tracing paper allowed me to do a rubbing on the back to transfer the layout onto yellow Canson cardstock using a metal stylus. The lead pencil showed up nicely on the smooth surface. Gathering all my black Micron fine tip markers, I outlined the design, erased the pencil lines and stippled the letters and ribbons to create a 3D shaded effect.
ANIMATION
The flourishes and letters were imported to After Effects, inverted to No Fill, then a Bokeh lighting video placed behind for the final result below.
PRODUCT
Once complete, the final result was mocked up in Photoshop as a tote.
